BMC approves formation of Mumbai Parking Authority to ensure convenient spaces for vehicles

As per reports, this body will look after providing secure, sufficient and economical spaces for stationing the vehicles.

Home to burgeoning numbers of the human population, Mumbai faces a dearth of space for all basic facilities and parking of vehicles remains to be one of the most troubling issues. In light of this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has given its approval to establish the Mumbai Parking Authority for resolving problems related to parking. As per reports, this body will look after the provision of secure, sufficient and economical spaces for stationing the vehicles.

External officials & advisors to aid the formation of the new body

Reportedly, the separate institution will manage and administer both on-street and off-street parking facilities in Mumbai. According to the information given by BMC, the setting up of the Mumbai Parking Authority was entailed in Development Control and Promotion Regulation(2034). Given the escalating parking issues in the city due to the growing count of vehicles, the formation of body was necessary to ensure convenient, safe and affordable parking lots at public places.

Further, the standing committee headed by Yashwant Jadhav has given its nod for designating external service providers and expert panels to aid the establishment of the new body. It has been reported that former IAS officer Ramanath Jha will take over the role of advisor for this process and experts from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences will also assist in different fields. Reportedly, BMC'S Additional Municipal Commissioner(Projects) has been deputed with the responsibilities of parking commissioner. He will look after the formation of the new body.

Expert group for setting up the body to manage 9 tasks

According to reports, an expert committee of individuals is constituted for the quick formation of the parking authority. Besides creating a strengthened framework of parking facilities in all 24-civic wards of the city, the expert group will also examine the legal considerations for setting up the body. As per reports, a total of 9 tasks have been given to the panel.

As a part of this, the members would deliberate and decide over the required policies, parking charges, problems regarding traffic signs, use of technology for better parking facilities and stationing of parking marshals. Additionally, city parking pools will also be formed for judicious use of public, commercial and residential properties for parking.
