BMC to vaccinate 12,000 people daily in phase 1 of Mumbai's COVID immunity drive

Mumbai's civic body will initiate the immunisation process in 24 hours of vaccine availability.

The Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to initiate the 1st phase of COVID-19 vaccination drive in Mumbai, within 24 hours of its availability. The programme will be carried out in 8 vaccination centres, with the goal of immunising a total of 12,000 healthcare beneficiaries, daily, through the 15-day-long phase.

Storage facilities and distribution carriers have been equipped accordingly with ice lined refrigerators, walk-in freezers and police personals to ensure safe storage and transport of the vaccine vials to the vaccination centres across the city.

Mumbai gears up for COVID vaccination drive

As the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted emergency use of two vaccines in India, the municipal authority of the financial capital has geared up to kickstart the first phase of the immunisation drive in the coming days. Additional Municipal Commissioner stated that about 8 centres in Mumbai, including KEM, Sion, Nair, Cooper, Bhabha Bandra, Rajawadi, Bhabha Kurla and Jogeshwari Trauma hospital will be working to provide COVID-19 shots to the recognised 1.25 lakh healthcare workers.

The BMC has mapped a distinguished layout, setting the quota of vaccine shots that will be provided every day at the various vaccine centres in the city. As per the civic distribution and immunisation plan, 2,000 shots will be administered at the facilities in KEM, Sion, Nair and Cooper Hospitals. Similarly, 1,000 people will get vaccinated every day at Bhabha Bandra, Rajwadi, Bhbha Kurla and Jogeshwari Trauma Hospitals.
As per reports, the second phase of the vaccination drive will immunise police personnel and municipal workers and officers. The tertiary phase will then focus to provide shots to about 50 lakh locals, including 30 lakh people over the age of 50.

Storage facilities in Mumbai equipped to T

A 5,000 sqft storage facility in the central sunburns of Kanjurmarg has been identified as the nodal storage facility. This building has been equipped to safely house the vaccine vials at the optimum temperature with the help of state-of-the-art facilities, two walk-in coolers of 40 cubic meters and 20 cubic meters can store the vials at 2 to 8 degrees celsius and -15 to -250 degrees celsius respectively. About 17 ILRs will be used in the city, where each vaccination centre will have one of these special fridges. Besides this, all vaccine carrier vehicles will have a police escort to ensure its safe distribution and transport.

With over 3 lakh cases, daily COVID caseload marks a decline in India

While the daily case count has marked a decline, the positivity rate of the country has shot up to 20.75% now

As per the data released by the Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Monday, India has marked a significant decrease in the daily COVID tally. A total of 3,06,064 people tested positive for coronavirus in the country taking the active caseload to 22,49,335, as of January 24.
