Decades old & crowded to the brim, Leopold Cafe in Colaba is where Mumbai comes to hangout

In Colaba, Leopold Cafe is known for serving cold beers, golden fried prawns & nostalgia

Mumbai is undoubtedly a paradise for a foodie. South Mumbai especially has no dearth of eateries and food outlets which serve great food, a chic ambience and good times. New food outlets practically mushroom out of wet sand at this part of the city and believe us, we aren't complaining! However when we speak of 'hangout spots' and 'iconic eateries' the Leopold Cafe is a name we just can never miss out on.

Located in the bustling lanes of Southern Mumbai's Colaba Causeway (Shahid Bhagat Singh Road), Leopold Cafe is known for its old-world charm, posters on the wall and the vibe which is reminiscent of a hip cafe and a fancy old-timey bar.

The cafe & the spirit of Mumbai

Upon entering the cafe, one would find that the cafe is pretty basic, albeit a little 80s/90s hipster. With Harley Davidson metal plates and old Bollywood movie posters on the wall, high ceilings, whitewashed walls and randomly clustered pillars, the cafe on its first look is weirdly intriguing.

Established in 1871 as an oil depot and then turned into a cafe in mid-1980s, Leopold has kept the vibe of the bygone days alive. Yet, once you breathe in the place, the tall ceilings and the walls you'll realise how everything here tells a story, from the bullet holes on the walls to the aforementioned posters. Everything tells the story of Mumbai and the things this resilient city has gone through.

The atmosphere here is pretty lively. If you sit here long enough you'll notice how everyone comes in gets a few beers, maybe something to eat, gulps it all down and as soon as they leave, the seat is filled with someone who's here to do exactly that! While the beers and the laughters continue, people come in and stare at the bullet holes and the cracks in the ceilings that were left after the 26/11 attacks and then absentmindedly chomp on their chicken or prawn and go about their business.

The cafe, its posters, its food and the vibe here uphold the spirit of Mumbai where, one comes to do what they have to, there's no time wasted and life goes by.

Knock Knock

The cafe is truly and icon and when looking for something affordable yet truly delicious, you must visit the place, even grab a quick beer. However, we'd recommend coming here to bask in the vibe alone, know stories and lose yourself in a time that once was.
