Historically linked across the Arabian Sea through maritime trade, Mumbai has long embraced diverse coastal culinary influences. Yet, during the August harvest season, the city’s food trail pivots sharp south. For students and working professionals whose holiday schedules make travelling back home to Kerala impossible, finding a comforting feast is all one can look forward to. This August, 9 restaurants in Mumbai are stepping up to recreate the nostalgia of festive home cooking. From classic vegetarian spreads to non-vegetarian twists, these venues offer an authentic taste of Onam Sadhya in Mumbai without leaving the city.

Bastian Ammakai

Bringing maternal tradition to the festive table, Ammakai is hosting an exclusive weekend Sadhya built around “Shilpa’s Amma’s Recipes.” The menu takes direct inspiration from the home-style flavours and dishes that shaped Shilpa Shetty’s childhood. Served across two days on August 22 and 23, the experience is designed to be highly intimate, capping attendance at 30 guests per seating around long communal tables. The feast features a 22-course vegetarian Sadhya laid out on traditional banana leaves, keeping the focus entirely on generous, home-inspired dining and shared regional traditions. Whether dining in at a hotel venue or ordering a feast directly to your doorstep, exploring these locations offers a clear look into how Mumbai’s kitchens continue to celebrate classic regional cooking traditions.

The Merchants

Collaborating with culinary group Backwaters Chechie, The Merchants is hosting “Onam Aaghosham” on August 22. The event pairs a traditional banana leaf feast with an energetic atmosphere, featuring live music and traditional cultural performances alongside the dining service. The curated spread covers fundamental regional items like Varatti, Parippu Nie, Olan, Avial, Kaalan, Matta Rice, Sambar, and Rasam. Beyond the core leaf layout, the menu adds popular regional staples, including Appam paired with vegetable stew and Manga Kanthari Mulagu Chammandi. The sweet selections lean heavily into traditional puddings, serving Ada Pradhaman, Thiruvonam Paal Payasam, and Parippu Pradhaman.

For a luxury fine-dining harvest feast, Saffron at JW Marriott is hosting “The Grand Sadhya” on Wednesday, August 26. The restaurant frames the single-day event as a homage to Kerala’s culinary heritage, serving a structured, classic leaf spread. The meal opens with traditional starters and condiments, including banana, Ingi Puli, banana chips, and mango acharam. Guests are then served classic Kerala dishes such as Thoranam Erissery, Kalan Curry, Aviyal, and Kottu Curry, alongside Mango Pulisary, Sambar, Paruppu Curry, Poriyal, and Rasam. Carbohydrate options are comprehensive, featuring Matta Rice, Ponni Rice, Thayir Sadam, and crisp Appalam. The feast progresses through a procession of curries, thorans, pachadis, and crispy accompaniments. Core savoury dishes include Rasam, Sambar, Avial, Olan, and Kaalan, paired with sides like Beetroot Thayir Pachadi, Puli Inji, Beans Thoran, and raw mango pickle. Dessert features creamy Pal Payasam and Sharkara Adapradhaman. For those looking for a lighter dinner option, the restaurant switches from the leaf feast to an à la carte menu during the evenings across the three-day celebration period.

Translating to “happiness” or “joy,” Santosham focuses on the essence of southern home cooking, steering clear of fusion trends. Much of the menu draws direct influence from sacred temple cuisine, traditionally served as prasadam. Beyond its regular regional offerings, the kitchen has put together a dedicated Onam Sadhya 2026 menu that covers classic preparations. The lineup features regional staples including Palada Pradhaman, Vellarikka Pachadi, Thenga Chammanthi, Parippu Curry, Varutharacha Sambar, Kalan, Olan and so much more.

Traditional vegetarian dishes like Nei Parippu, Angamaly Mango Curry, Travancore Olan, Mathanga Erissery, and Avial are served alongside non-vegetarian items including Chicken Thoran and Prawn Roast.
