The Veer Mata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo is bound to witness addition of exotic varieties of fauna from around the world.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is working on multiple projects to revamp the Byculla zoo as per global standards. In the latest set of developments, Mumbai's animal home, originally named Veer Mata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo (VMJBUZ), will witness the addition of exotic varieties of fauna from around the world. The civic body has proposed to introduce Giraffes, Zebras, white lions and jaguars in the Byculla zoo.
New Animals to be sheltered in an extension facility around the zoo
Five years ago, eight Humboldt penguins were brought to the Byculla zoo. After the penguins successfully adapted to the environment in the customized cold shelters created for them, the BMC has now planned on introducing more new animals. The current zoo area would be expanded to include a 10-acre land adjacent to it where the newly brought animals would be provided shelter. As per reports, the Byculla zoo has been given the status of a 'medium zoo' for a period till September 2022 by the Central Zoo Authority.
The Mumbai Municipal Commissioner asserted that the zoo would house more animals sourced from different regions around the world in a staggered manner. To facilitate the latest projects, the BMC has increased its budget allocation for the zoo development though the increment is marginal.
A string of projects to renovate the zoo premises
According to reports, 10 new animal exhibits have been added to the zoo recently. A part of the bird aviary and enclosures for Otter, Indian Wolf, Sambar and Barking Deer and Nilgai and Four-horned Antelope are undergoing construction which is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Additionally, the zoo would be gifted with a museum-like facility wherein models of Gateway of India, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, beaches, mangroves will be displayed. This attraction is supposed to be housed on the first floor of the interpretation centre and virtual tours will also be organised for the same.
With the introduction of the new animals, the zoo would surely garner greater audiences. In the future, Byculla zoo can become a model of inspiration for zoos of other metropolitan cities to follow suit.
