Greenfield Konkan Expressway to cut down travel time between Mumbai-Sidndhdurg to just 3 hours

The construction of the 400-km-long route is expected to complete in 6 years.

In a bid to augment road connectivity in Maharashtra, the Public Works Department has penned down a plan of constructing a 400-km long expressway between Mumbai and Sindhudurg. The project, by the name Greenfield Konkan Expressway, will map through Raigad and Ratnagiri, slashing down the 9 hours of commute between commute Mumbai and Sindhudurg to just 3 hours. As per officials, the main focus of this project is to further development in the Konkan region.

Expressway to be constructed at a cost of about ₹70,000 crores

The Konkan Expressway has been budgeted at ₹70,000 crores and will expand over about 4,000 hectares of land, read reports. Officials informed that a detailed development report will be drafted within 2 years, while the construction plan is likely to extend over 4 additional years. The proposed route has been mapped along the lines of the 701-kilometre-long Balasahab Thackeray Maharashtra Samrudhi Marg, connecting Nagpur with Mumbai.

Last year, the government had tasked the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to formulate a thorough project report, which was approved by the high-level infrastructure committee headed by the CM recently. Reportedly, a unanimous decision of the reviewing bodies, including both houses of legislative bodies, has assigned MSRC to handle the project, given its expertise in this domain.

Project likely to aid the development of Konkan region

Even though the Konkan region is close to the financial capital of India geographically, it has not seen a lot of development till date, owing to inadequate transport facilities. As such, these areas frequently witness a lot of youth migrating to Mumbai for better employment opportunities.

The project will carve out a proper route between the two cities, fostering an easy flow of traffic, explained a bureaucrat. This, in turn, will give a facelift to the region's commercial landscape and aid in its holistic development.
