In Maharashtra, Mumbai has achieved the highest vaccination target by administering 14,10,537 COVID jabs, since January 16, 2021.
In a milestone victory, Maharashtra has become the first state in India to administer over 80 lakh COVID-19 vaccine jabs since January 16, 2021. According to official data, released on Tuesday, the state has achieved a total vaccination of 81,27,248 beneficiaries, where 72,98,206 people have taken their first jab and 8,29,042 have been immunised with the second dose. This release also highlights that Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of corona cases and fatalities, across the country.
Mumbai takes the vaccination lead in Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, Mumbai has achieved the highest vaccination target with 14,10,537 jabs, followed by Pune, where 11,14,040 people have received the doses, across all categories and age groups as mandated by the Centre. This comes as a major respite to the two districts as both Mumbai and Pune rank nationally among the Covid-19 mega-hotspots.
They have reported the maximum number of infections and deaths, causing huge concerns, even as the state retreated into a night-curfew, daytime stringent norms and a weekend lockdown regime since April 5 to check the pandemic spread. In the last 24 hours, Mumbai has recorded 9,879 fresh cases while Pune's tallies have clocked 8, 211 new infections. These high statistics have added to the state's aggregate caseload which now stands at 5,84,969 cases.
The Centre has made the COVID vaccination is available to all people over the age of 45 years, since April 1. Consequently, the newer cases are being found in the younger people and Maharashtra is facing the same hurdles. The Chief Minister has now appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include youth above 25 years in the national vaccination programme and expand the immunity drive.
