IMD issues a yellow alert in Mumbai amid forecasts of 'heavy to very heavy' rain

Heavy downpour is likely in Mumbai for the next 48 hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, with forecasts of isolated heavy showers for the next 48 hours. The Mumbai city and suburbs have reportedly clocked in 25.8 and 39.4 mm of rains, respectively, in the last 24 hours. Besides, the MeT department has also predicted 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' over Thane, Palghar and other parts of Maharashtra for the next 3-4 days.

Monsoons reactive in Madhya Maharashtra

Several regions in Maharashtra, including capital Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Satara and Pune, witnessed intermittent moderate to intense spells of rains in the past 12 hours, which are set to intensify further. As per the Regional Meteorological Cente in Mumbai, a low-pressure depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to move north-westwards, reactivating monsoon for the Konkan Belt and Madhya Maharashtra.

Consequently, the weather department has raised a yellow alert in Mumbai for the next 2 days. The possibility of intense, sporadic rains is very likely here during the warning period. A similar, yellow "be aware", warning has also been issued for Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana and Washim for today.

Meanwhile, a higher degree orange alert has been marked for the Palghar region. Extremely heavy to very heavy rainfalls are in store for this area till September 15. Other Maharashtra districts, namely Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nasik, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts are also in line to get heavy showers at isolated places for the next two days.
