COVID cases rise for the 11th consecutive day in Maharashtra, cross the 40k mark

No Omicron infection traced in the last 24 hours in the state

COVID cases in Maharashtra continue to rise for 11 consecutive days, with the fresh load rising over the 40,000 mark on Friday. While no infection of the Omicron variant was detected here in the last 24 hours, the case positivity rate in the state is still high, intensifying the threat of the 'third wave' here. As per reports, Maharashtra's COVID tally has clocked over the 69 lakh mark, with 1,41,492 active cases. The state officials are expecting this figure to rise over the 2 lakh count by the third week of January.

Increased travel spike COVID spread

These extremely high numbers are being attributed to increased travel from 'at-risk' and 'high-risk' countries, added reports. A total of 35,697 travellers have landed here the countries posing a COVID threat, of which 403 have tested positive. Around 416 travellers from other countries have also tested positive. Their reports have been sent for genome sequencing now to confirm Omicron suspicion.

Besides, another 2,742 positive samples from field surveys conducted since November 1, 2021 have been sent for genomic sequencing. Reports of 86 such samples are currently awaited, the officials said.
