Meals from THESE restaurants in Mumbai will now be delivered by city's trustworthy Dabbawalas!

Under the current pilot program, Dabbawalas would take up delivery operations in Lower Parel, Bandra(W) & BKC.

What food is to life, the dabbawalas are to the spirit of Aamchi Mumbai. Acting as the central backbone of Mumbai's food industry, dabbawalas are one of the most crucial drivers of the nation's financial capital. Amid the disbalance accentuated by the pandemic, these swift delivery persons have now collaborated with Impresario Handmade Restaurants, to bring you food from some of the loved eateries in the city, including SOCIAL, Smoke House Deli, and SaltWater Cafe.

Reportedly, the initial partnership will be worked out through a pilot project, wherein the dabbawalas will deliver orders received by Impresario's own tech interface. Under this program, they will look after delivery operations in regions like Lower Parel, Bandra(West) and BKC and the collaborative efforts will be amplified in the upcoming months.

Meanwhile, hotels and eateries across the nation are open only for deliveries and thereby, they have requested customers to place direct orders. This would save the financially-hit industry from paying cuts and commissions to food apps like Zomato and Swiggy and also prevent data masking, reportedly.

As per reports, Impresario will soon initiate a monthly meal plan, starting at a cost of ₹6,000. Slated for a start on 24 May 2021, meals under this scheme will be available across Khar, Vikhroli, Versova, and Lower Parel during the first phase, reportedly. Further, it has been stated by reports that the food will be delivered by the dabbawalas.

Hit hard by year-long uncertainties

Reportedly, Mumbai provides employment to around 5,000 individuals through its dabbawala network. Certified by Six Sigma for their efficiency and performance, they work day and night assuring hot meals for thousands in the city. When the COVID pandemic escalated last year, their operations halted completely and it was nowhere in thought that the uncertainties would continue for more than a year.

While the early days of 2021 carried certain sings of reverting to stability, the advancement of second-wave revived the lockdown and an ensuing state of turmoil, similar to 2020. Due to these issues, the dabbawalas have been out of a regular job for more than a year and now, the current association is expected to bring significant benefits for them.
