Mumbai’s metro-mesh network is all set to amplify soon as the MMRDA has decided to start test runs on the overhead corridors of Line 2A and 7 from May 31. The Development Authority has attained the electrification work on the two suburban metro lines to launch the trials, Monday onwards, with the aim to commission commercial runs by October 2021. These elevated routes will slash the travel time by around two-third, compared to the existing duration of the road journey and ease road congestions, as well.
MMRDA harnesses lockdown advantage to expedite metro work
The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority has decided to line up the trial runs for the 16.50 km-long Metro 7 (Dahisar East-Andheri East) and the 18.50 km-long Metro 2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar) from May 31. As per reports, the MMRDA will deploy the new sleek ‘Made in India’ rakes, developed by the BEML. These units were delivered to the Mumbai Metro earlier this year in January.
Reportedly, the BEML has also provided Catenary Maintenance Vehicles for carrying out the crucial electrification work here. All other infrastructure development activities such as work on station buildings, elevators, escalators is also proceeding at rapid speed, due to low public movement during the lockdown.
The MMRDA is supervising the implementation of the entire metro web in Mumbai, comprising a vast 337-km mesh across the metropolitan region. At present, other metro lines are in different stages of construction across the city, including some running partly or fully underground. Once fully functional, it aims to provide a hassle-free commuting experience to the Mumbaikars.
Presently, only Mumbai Metro One operates in the nation’s commercial capital as its solitary metro corridor. This stretches for 11.40km along the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar track.
