Ushering ease of connectivity and travel across Mumbai, the BEST green flagged the operations of shuttle e-buses on Tuesday. Daily commuters can now enjoy the benefit of these AC buses, that link the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA-Terminal 2) to South Mumbai. Reportedly, separate services will ply on point-to-point routes to Bandra-Kurla Complex, Gateway of India and Nariman Point to enhance passengers' convenience.

Elevating connectivity & convenience

A new fleet of 60 noiseless and zero-pollution e-bus shuttle buses was launched by the State Minister of Environment, Aditya Thackeray on Sunday. "To elevate connectivity & convenience for inbound and outbound passengers, BEST has launched Airport Electric Bus Service. Starting Tuesday, passengers can utilize this special shuttle service between CSMIA (T2) to South Mumbai & BKC.", the Minister said in a tweet. Soon, other destinations and routes will also be included, he added.

The buses will ply across the sea link daily, driving direct commute for passengers travelling between the Mumbai Airport to the Island city. It is being said that this new service will give a facelift to the public commute in Mumbai, putting state-of-the-art facilities at public disposal.

The buses will ply through 2 distinct routes, to benefit more passengers. The first route will begin from CSMIA T-2 and will cross the Western Expressway to reach the Bandra Worli Sea Link to connect Nehru Planetarium, Haji Ali, Pt Paluskar chowk, Marine Lines, via Trident Hotel, Nariman Point, CSMT and Gateway of India.

The second route will connect the commercial hotspot of BKC to the Airport through the Western Expressway and Kalangar. Buses on this track will halt at various bus stops within the sprawling BKC.

BMC to upgrade an All-AC BEST fleet by 2027

Notably, the Maharashtra administration is working on a bigger scheme, i.e., for the electrification of Mumbai buses in line with the Climate Action Plan. As per reports, the state aims to completely upgrade the BEST fleet here to electric buses by 2027. For this, around 1400 single-deckers buses, 400 mid AC, 100 mini AC and 200 AC double-deckers will be procured by 2022. The state has set the target to achieve 50% electrification by 2023.

The commissioning of the upgraded e-buses will considerably reduce carbon footprints, building a 'green' roadway corridor in the city. This will ensure easier transits in Mumbai, benefitting the general public.
