The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation conducted drives for distributing ration and essential items among transgender people and commercial sex workers, with assistance from various social organisations. Through this initiative, the civic body aimed to provide daily necessities to the deprived sections of the society, who are grappling to make ends meet during this desolate period, propelled by the pandemic.

Reportedly, the civic body successfully assured food supplies for nearly 4,500 people under this scheme. Launched by the planning department of the municipal organisation, the program envisioned supporting socially marginalised individuals who are dependent on daily earnings for the procuring necessities. Affected severely by the pandemic and the induced restrictions, these individuals struggle to find resources to fulfil their daily needs. Given the dire state of affairs, such intervention comes at the much-needed hour!
The scheme was executed on Tuesday by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (eastern suburbs), Additional Municipal Commissioner (city) in the presence of a BMC Corporator. Reportedly, the program started at Savitribai Phule Municipal School in NM Joshi Marg. While all required food items were packed in the ration kits, supplemental supplies of daily needs like laundry products were also ensured.
Though the pandemic has ushered significant turmoil in the lives of umpteen citizens, the plight of socially and economically cornered citizens, remains to be unheard of. In such circumstances, it is important for the local level bodies to plan and implement similar steps so that minimum social benefits are guaranteed to everyone. Additionally, it is high time that we recognise the need to respect inclusivity and diversity in our society.
