So far 40% of the work on this project has been completed, says BMC
The Brihanmumbia Municipal Corporation is ensuring round-the-clock work for the completion of the Coastal Road Project in Mumbai, by November 2023. A civic official on Thursday informed that the BMC has completed about 40% of work for the first phase of the project, to commission operations within the slated deadline. The designated civic team is reportedly functioning in 3 shifts to hasten the execution of this infrastructure consignment.
Work on in full swing on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project
Pegged to be one of the most ambitious projects of the BMC, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project was kicked off early in 2020, somewhere around the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The two-phased project is conducting full swing operations since then, despite the COVID hurdles, in line with the 2023 deadline.
"The Rs. 12,700 crore project, being executed by the BMC from its own funds, comprises the 27 km total length including 16 km of interchanges, and the 40-feet diameter tunnel running under the Malabar Hill," said the BMC Commissioner I.S Chahal. As of now, more than one-third of the civil work on the 8-lane Coastal Road, gulfing the Arabian Sea from Marine Drive to Worli has been completed. This 10.58 km stretch also houses a 1 km long tunnel, the official added.
125,000 vehicles are estimated to use the Mumbai Coastal Road daily
As of now, work on about 900 meters of the undersea tunnel, remains to be completed. This structure is the first of its kind 40 feet wide pass, the BMC Commissioner informed. The project will also cover a 125-acre garden on reclaimed land abutting the freeway and will also make provisions for underground parking for 1,852 cars.
The first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project will extend from Marine Drive in South Bombay to Kandivali western suburbs in the north. As per estimates, the stretch will facilitate the movement of 125,000 vehicles, every day, cutting travel time from the present 2 hours minutes to a little over half an hour.
An advanced infrastructure scheme, the Coastal Road will also provide convenient interchanges at major locations, such as the airport, sea links, key railway stations and Breach Candy. Besides, a multilevel interchange will also be established at Haji Ali bay to provide connectivity to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road.
