BMC begins door-to-door vaccination trial for bed-ridden people in Mumbai

The first phase of the doorstep vaccination has been rolled out in Mumbai's K-east ward.

The Brihannumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday launched the trial for door-step vaccination to strengthen its immunity drive for the bed-ridden people in Mumbai. As per reports, the first phase of the door-to-door scheme will be tested in the western suburb of Andheri (East), Marol, Chakala and other areas of the K-east ward. The information about these bed-ridden citizens will be aggregated at the covidvacc2bedridden@gmail.com, the civic body stated. So far details of around 4,466 such people have been received.

Availability of medical provision in K-east ward

As per the statement of the additional municipal commissioner of the BMC, the municipal body has specifically chosen this area first because it has more hospitals. The K-east ward also centres on the civic-run Seven Hills Hospitals which can serve as the central medical facility in case of any emergencies after vaccinations. The BMC will be in a better position to rush the people to this institute, he added.

This trial will become the prototype of the door-step vaccination. Through this, the BMC will observe and improve its procedures to ensure a glitch-free, large-scale drive across Mumbai. Reportedly, all vaccinations will be carried out in the present pf experts - subscribing to the necessary precautions. The expert committee has further decided that the bed-ridden citizens will be given the COVAXIN jab.

Medical certificate & consent for door-step vaccination

The BMC has made a home system after several demands from the public to do so for the bed-ridden people. Thus, this drive extension will make space for those individuals who are unable to visit the vaccination centres due to physical or medical conditions. The provision will be aided by Project Mumbai, a non-government organisation, the BMC stated.

To avail of this benefit, people need to provide the BMC with a medical certificate that clearly states the beneficiary in question will remain bed-ridden for at least the next six months. This document, along with the consent of the person or guardian relative will be submitted to the administration. After this vaccination drive in the K-east ward, the aspects of the next phase immunisations will be considered, the BMC said.
