Knocksense: A local content and recommendations platform

The Indian Meteorological Department has lined up all 36 districts of Maharashtra under a heavy rain alert in view of cyclone Gulab. As per the MeT, the storm has already hit the mainland with rains, thunderstorms and lightning on Sunday bringing incessant downpours in several 'red alert' areas of the state.

The Gulab impact is likely to continue on Tuesday, putting state capital Mumbai and the districts of Ratnagiri, Nashik, Pune as well as Ahmednagar in Maharashtra under an 'orange alert' warning. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, suggest reports.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rains in Mumbai on Tuesday

Cyclone Gulab, hit parts of the Konkan region on Sunday and the storm is now moving westwards, at a 75-85 kmph wind speed, gusting to a 95 kmph high. The cyclone is travelling towards central Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast.

The rain spell is likely to intensify with the inwards movement of the storm, as per reports. As per MeT forecasts, Mumbai and adjoining areas will receive extremely heavy rain, across isolated regions on Tuesday. An orange warning has been raised here accordingly. Strong winds, accompanied by thunderstorms can also be expected.

Notably, this is the third cyclone hitting the Indian mainland this year. Previously, cyclone Tauktae on the western coast and Yaas on the eastern side brought a torrential pour to the Indian subcontinent. According to data records between 1990 and 2021, only 14 such storms have brewed in the month of September. This rare phenomenon was witnessed only three times in the past decade (2011 to 2021), excluding cyclone Gulab.
