Mumbai residents welcomed a much-needed respite on Wednesday as relentless monsoon rains subsided, revealing clearer skies following a torrential 24-hour deluge that dumped 300 mm on the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts this relief will continue for the next three days.
Despite the break, the intense downpours have placed the city on the precipice of breaking historic records. With ten days remaining in August, Mumbai’s monthly total already exceeds 1000 mm. This puts it within striking distance of the 1240 mm record set in 2020 and, if the rain returns with similar intensity, it could even challenge the all-time August record of 1250 mm established in 1958.
Meanwhile, the neighbouring Navi Mumbai area has been severely impacted, recording 729 mm of rain in just five days. As conditions improve, normalcy is returning with educational institutions reopening and no current advisories for travel disruptions.
