Fire fighting systems to be upgraded at 16 hospitals in Mumbai; COVID jumbo centres to come up too

The BMC has arranged for 5,908 beds across 5 jumbo centres in Mumbai to ensure COVID safety.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to equip 16 Mumbai civic hospitals with smoke detectors and extractors systems in a bid to avert fire accidents and arson cases at medical institutes. This move comes in wake of the fire tragedy at the SICU of Bhandara Hospital, which claimed the lives of 10 newborns in January this year. Reportedly, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has already completed inspections at the hospitals to upgrade the fire-fighting measures and its findings have now paved way for the installation of new amenities.

Smoke detectors will directly activate exhaust systems

The new fire-fighting system, as the name suggests, will be able to detect the source of the smoke and extract it. A budget of ₹2.1 crores will be released to complete the installations within 6 months. As per reports, the draft was tabled before the standing committee meeting on Wednesday.

There have been several incidents previous where the smoke from a fire has hampered visibility, claiming the lives of many due to suffocation. The new smoke detectors machines will alert and tactical the exhaust system, ensuring the dispersal of gas, informed a civic official. This will eventually help prevent accidents and even fatalities.

BMC to spend ₹104.89 crores to operate & maintain COVID jumbo centres

Meanwhile, the BMC has also decided to spend around ₹104.89 crores to keep up the operations and maintenance of the COVID Jumbo Centres in Mumbai, amid threats of an impending third wave. It has been reported that the municipal body has made provision for 5,908 beds, including 738 ICU and 200 for beds across 5 jumbo centres, in anticipation of the expected surge.

In addition to this, the BMC has further completed the work of 3 new jumbo facilities in Malad, Kanjurmarg and Somaiya Ground in Sion. Besides, the civic body has also set up 100 ICU beds in BKC jumbo centre along with 730 beds in Dahisar. This medical infrastructure boom is being implemented to prevent resource paucity in case of a future pandemic emergency.
