Allow indoor sports even if it is for limited hours, argue associations in Mumbai.
Amid the declining spread of the coronavirus in Mumbai, players engaged in indoor sports activities have urged for the resumption of their games. This development follows the demands raised by retailers, traders, gyms and salon owners for a similar request regarding their services. The players have pointed that if the gyms and health clubs are permitted to operate, they should also be included under the banner of the same relaxations.
Sanitising equipment, time slots can assure COVID control, players suggest
The COVID caseload is dipping continuously in Mumbai, with a restricted test positivity ratio and the overall spread. As such, the players of sports associations in Mumbai have argued to allow indoor sports such as badminton, table tennis and squash, even if it is for a few hours, with restrictions. Like other businesses, indoor sports can also be permitted till 4 PM, the players of associations added.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the players have not had the opportunity to train properly and are thus losing out on competitiveness. The President of the Maharashtra Badminton Association reportedly said in a statement that they have had several representations to the government, and will soon conduct a follow up too. A fair chance, with proper guidelines, can be put in place for indoor sports, much like gyms. Otherwise also, these games do not involve close contact, he cleared.
As per the present norms of the BMC, swimming pools in Mumbai are completely shut, while gyms are allowed to run their services within 7 AM to 4 PM from Monday to Friday (5 days a week) only. People visiting gyms have to do so in time slots and are given sanitising equipment. Players have pointed out that similar systems can be devised for indoor sports as well, however, the silence of the government and BMC is causing resentment among sportspersons.
