The Guardian Minister of Mumbai on Wednesday hinted at the possibilities of resumption of local train services for the general public, within two to three days. The suburban train operations were running on a precautionary, restricted schedule and passenger load for the last 4 months in wake of the second COVID rise. However, the cabinet has now reviewed the possibility of resuming the service of the local trains and BEST buses for the commoners, given the dip in infections and significant vaccine coverage.
'Lifeline of Mumbai' could return soon for vaccinated passengers
At present, the local trains in Mumbai are operational just for essential service employees, to curb the spread of coronavirus via modes of public transport. The suburban rail network, often referred to as the lifeline of Mumbai, is the most popular means of public travel in the MMR. The break in the services has impacted the daily activity of the general public in a big way and hence the demand for its resumption is only growing each day.
In this regard, the state cabinet, in a review discussion explored the avenue of reopening the local trains to at least all those who are fully vaccinated. "As a Minister, I am also of the view that person whose two doses are completed should be allowed to travel in Mumbai local, we have also informed Chief Minister about this. After studying the report by the task force, a decision on Mumbai local will be taken in next two to three days", said the Guardian Minister.
Besides this, the minister also said a decision regarding increasing the operational hours of restaurants will also be taken soon. This graded and gradual unlocking procedure of the state by administration is sure to restore normalcy in the city, soon n.
