The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is rolling out an ambitious initiative to improve pedestrian connectivity around metro stations citywide. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the effort is part of MMRDA’s Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) plan, which includes building new foot overbridges (FOBs) and expanding footpaths to ensure smoother transitions between metro lines, suburban rail stations, and major commercial zones.
Collaborating with Walking Project, a pedestrian advocacy group active since 2012, the agency is focusing on making intermodal travel safer, more accessible, and user-friendly for all commuters.
MMRDA eyes holistic travel with FOBs and more
The decision follows discussions with Walking Project, which highlighted issues like uneven footpaths, lack of wheelchair ramps, and poorly designed road crossings. Vedant Mhatre of Walking Project noted that while MMRDA has widened footpaths near station entrances, accessibility remains a challenge in surrounding areas.

MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee emphasised a “holistic approach,” integrating metros with pod taxis, ropeways, and last-mile transport. The upgrades aim to boost metro ridership while ensuring safer, faster commutes. With tenders already floated, work is expected to begin soon, marking a significant step toward Mumbai’s seamless transit vision.
