Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Mumbai Police have enforced a month-long ban on firecrackers across the city. Effective from May 11 to June 9, 2025, the prohibitory order is issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act.
Fireworks banned, coastline guarded
The directive bans the use of fireworks, rockets, and even chidi, a commonly used firecracker, within the Brihanmumbai area. To ensure citywide compliance, authorities are broadcasting the order through loudspeakers and displaying public notices at key locations.
Alongside, Maharashtra’s fishing community has been alerted to avoid sensitive maritime zones, including oil rigs and defence areas, after intelligence suggested possible security threats. The Indian Navy held urgent meeting with fishermen, coastal police, and the coast guard, warning of strict measures, including ‘shoot to kill’ orders for unauthorised vessels near restricted zones. The advisory comes in response to reports of Pakistani forces seizing Indian fishing boats, sparking concerns that these vessels could be repurposed for possible attacks.
India-Pakistan call truce, tension continues to simmer
In a sudden diplomatic shift, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday, as announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The truce comes after US mediation, with former President Donald Trump praising both nations for de-escalation. However, intermittent clashes continue along the LoC, keeping security forces on high alert.
