The Mumbai Police will solve minor couple problems, lowering the burden of lower-level courts.
The Mumbai Police has decided to resume couple counselling cells at police stations across the city, to help find amicable solutions to minor matrimonial issues. As per reports, such centres were operational in Mumbai from 2012 to 2015, which assisted distressed married couples to solve their problems, without letting it escalate to courts.
Mumbai Police to counsel couples
In a bid to lower the burden on the judiciary, the Mumbai Police Department has decided to resume counselling cell operations for couples. In line with the Supreme Court orders, all stations and chowkis already have a help desk to resolve minor grievances. However, now, dedicated centres will be set-up for couples, stated the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who is also the department spokesperson.
Elaborating on the procedure, the spokesperson stated that after a couple or an individual files a non-cognisable complaint against their partner, they will have to relay an application, detailing the matrimonial problem to the counselling centres. Officials will then set up a meeting with the couple and initiate the process of counselling. He also added that the police helpline is at the disposal of distressed women, at all times.
Presently, one such cell is active in Mumbai at the headquarters of the Police Department, at the Crawford Market. Reportedly, in the lockdown itself, the centre received about 187 complaints from people, who wanted the concerned department to take legal actions against their spouses.
Following the procedure, couples were called for counselling sessions at the headquarters, where police helped to resolve issues with dialogue, ensuring it doesn't escalate to courts. As per reports, this counselling cell, singlehandedly solved 18 disputes and is dealing with about 15 more such complaints, as of now. About 42 couples were re-directed to police stations in their areas to record final statements, following which the counselling will begin. Meanwhile, 74 couples were suggested to mutually separate.
