An AC cab between Mumbai Pune now costs about ₹675, instead of the earlier ₹475.
Regular commuters between Mumbai and Pune will now have to face the brunt of increased fuel prices and the hiked private cab fares. As per reports, an AC cab between Mumbai and Pune now costs about ₹675, instead of the earlier ₹475. Travellers who shuttle between the two cities via roadways in the absence of frequent trains since the advent of the COVID pandemic will now have to shell out more money. Additionally, the cab rates that provide an airport-to-airport drop in Mumbai and Pune have also heightened.
Less trains & increased cab fares add to Mumbaikars' trouble
While railways are pegged to be the cheapest travel option for regular commuters, the lack of services in the pandemic era has pushed the traffic to roads. Currently, only two trains - Deccan Queen and Indrayani Express run between Mumbai and Pune, other rail services like Sahyadri Express and Sinhagad Express which have more stops continue to remain suspended here.
Though this has increased the demand of cabs between Mumbai and Pune, private cab booking is yet to reach its peak. This, reportedly, makes it unfeasible for private cab drivers to provide commute at pre-COVID rates, especially in the backdrop of increased diesel rates.
" I travel to Pune every weekend and the increased rates are going to bring troubles. It will be beneficial for all if the trains start soon or the rates are either capped or regulated in some way.", said Mumbaikar Vaishnavi Sanap.
Notably, there is no spike in the MSRTC bus rates, however, not many travellers resort to this means, suggested reports. While convenience plays a big role, drivers along the Mumbai-Pune-Shivneri bus route have explained how most passengers are lured to private cabs at cheaper fares. The rate eventually rises depending on the number of seats the cabbie is able to fill.
