Mumbai on Tuesday recorded 506 fresh COVID-19 cases, marking the steepest single-day spike in over 100 days. As per the reports, the city last logged over 500 daily infections on February 6, when the count reached 536 cases. With this, Mumbai’s total COVID tally now stands at 10,65,802, with 2,526 active patients, highest in Maharashtra.
COVID-19 graph rises in May
As per reports, around 97% of the new cases were reported to be asymptomatic, which accounts for about 489 of the 506 cases. Hospitalisations are at 0.37%, leaving 24,472 beds vacant as of now.
With this, the COVID-19 recovery rate in Mumbai stands at 98%. On Tuesday, around 218 patients recovered, pushing the cumulative count to 10,43,710. No fatality was reported on the day, limiting the toll to 19,566.
Despite these trends, the overall COVID-19 graph is rising in Mumbai. The city has logged a significant uptick in the numer of cases in the month of May, as compared that of April. Statistically, cases in May were at 5,979, up from 1,822 in April. The death rate, however, has fallen. Only 3 deaths were logged in the past month as compared to April’s 4 fatalities.
Mumbai prepared ahead of expected fourth wave
Considering the steep hike in COVID cases, Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has issued eight fresh directives to assistant commissioners of all 24 wards. These directives majorly include testing on war-footing and increase vaccination among the 12-18 age category.
A high alert has also been issued to get jumbo hospital facilities ready. These facilities are touted to be equipped with adequate paradmeical staff, beds, infrastructure and other amenities to avert medical shortages or an emergency like situation ahead of the anticipated fourth wave.
