The boundaries of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary has been declared an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ).
The Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ)
A new ministry order earmarks the ESZ boundary for up to 3.89km around the TCFS, till the mangrove forest on the western part of the flamingo park. The protected zone now covers the entirety of Thane Creek and the adjoining Navi Mumbai area on the eastern side. Previously also, any sort of establishment or industrial activities within a 10 km radius of the flamingo sanctuary was not allowed.
The southern end of the sanctuary's boundary touches the Sion-Panvel Highway and the commercial part of the Thane creek is further away, which is not valuable to the sanctuary as such. Furthermore, the ESZ will be limited to 2.2 km on the northern end of the Thane creek.
A zonal master plan will be proposed in 2 weeks
The Maharashtra government is now supposed to present a zonal master plan in the next two weeks, added reports. A detailed discussion with the locals along with the officials of the environment, urban development, tourism, forest and wildlife departments, the PWD and the State Pollution Control Board will take place before the plan is proposed.
With a clarification that the zonal plan is not supposed to impose any sort of restrictions on the present land, infrastructure or activities, this provision will be implemented soon. As per reports, the hill slopes will be free of any construction and any sort of mining activities will not be permitted.
Moreover, a ban will be imposed on the existence or expansion of industries causing pollution. In the regular, the prohibition of hydroelectric projects, hazardous substances and new commercial construction within a km of the ESZ will also be ordained.
