Located about 150 km from Mumbai, this edifice is an architectural marvel and is one of the strongest marine forts of India. Sultan's kaarigari and Maratha's Art of War!
The origin story of this mighty fort as per legends is that, some local fishermen of Rajapuri made a wooden fort to protect themselves from pirates in the 15th century, which was followed by a strategic capture by Nizam Shahi Sultan of Ahmednagar. His men replaced this wooden fort with a herculean fortress, that was later eyed and attacked by many armies like the Portuguese, Marathas and the British.
Although constructed by the Sultans, the fort shows many signs and symbols of the Marathas who made significant changes to the fort once they had it. Stories also suggest that this fort once had about 500 cannons all around it and as yet, 3 of those still remain for you to touch and feel the warmth of the firing that took place centuries ago!
Housing natural lakes, offices, palaces and religious centres, this island-fort qualifies as resourceful and unbreachable! The best time to visit this spot is between October and March and the fort is open for visitors from 7 AM to 6 PM. If you're done exploring the fort and want something more, you can go lazying around at the gorgeous Murud Beach, watch the breathtaking Garambi Falls with your picnic basket in hand and explore the bewitching Ahmedganj Palace as well!
