Maharashtra is facing its second battle with the deadly COVID contagion after a slowdown was witnessed in the past months. Breaching the daily numbers recorded in the last 129 days, the state registered 8,807 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, as per reports. The state capital, Mumbai has been equally affected, witnessing 1,167 new infections that broke a three-month record.
Next 10 days crucial for the city of Mumbai
Reportedly, Mumbai observed a COVID tally higher than 1,167 previously on 28 October 2020. In addition to this, it is alarming to note that Mumbai's COVID count has passed the 1000 mark after a period of 88 days. According to reports, the Chief Minister of the state has instructed the Minister of Skill Development to accelerate testing and accentuate the process of tracing suspected individuals. Recently, the state cabinet conducted a meeting where issues of soaring COVID cases and the ongoing inoculation drives were addressed and measures in this direction were deliberated upon.
As per reports, a member of the COVID task force stated that the next 10 days are going to be crucial for the city given the multiplying number of cases and increasing fatalities seen in the past weeks. It is notable to recognise that the fatality rate (1.7%) has been low for the city in spite of the prevailing circumstances. As per the information entailed in the reports, the average number of COVID cases stood at 3,347 for February, marking a significant rise from the count of 2,973, recorded in January.
Dharavi registers 2 digit count of COVID cases after a gap of 1 month
After an interval of more than a month, Dharavi recorded a double-digit count of COVID cases standing at 10, as per the data given by BMC. At least 3 states in the country have been affected by two strains of the COVID virus, one of which is Maharashtra. While there is no evidence to link the fresh spread of infections with the new strains, the state is keeping a stringent eye on all new developments amid the pandemic.
Renewed acceleration in COVID numbers across the state of Maharashtra

In Maharastra, the cumulative figure of COVID cases stood at 21,21,119 while the state had 59,358 active patients of the virus on Thursday. With 10,87,111 doses of the COVID vaccine administered so far, the state is trying to expand its vaccination drives.
