Mumbai’s iconic Parsi restaurant in Fort, Jimmy Boy, has closed its doors following structural safety concerns, cutting short its journey shy of turning 100. A joint inspection by BMC, Fire Brigade and Mumbai Police revealed deep cracks and signs of structural distress, especially on the eastern wall of Vikas Premises Co-op Society building on Green Street, home to Jimmy Boy.
Why did Jimmy Boy close at 99?
A notice under Section 354 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act was issued, ordering immediate evacuation and demolition. Structural auditors Mahimtura Consultants confirmed severe corrosion and weakening of beams, slabs and columns. As per reports, despite earlier warnings and repair recommendations, no action was taken by the housing society.
Further, BMC has given the society seven days to vacate and demolish the structure. If the deadline is missed, demolition will be carried out by the civic body at the society’s expense, with possible legal consequences under additional sections of the MMC Act. If the building is listed as a heritage property, clearance from the Heritage Department will be necessary before demolition begins.
