Here's why we think a trip to the Taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai is the best weekend plan
As long as we can recall, the Taraporewala Aquarium has been jazzing up our weekends in Mumbai. Located at the Marine Drive, the aquarium is one of the oldest in the country and one of our favourite weekend 'going-out' spots. The aquarium has hosted many picnics, school outings and after exam treats for us and even today, it brings back the fond memories.
Built in the 50s, the Taraporewala Aquarium has been a hub of animal and marine life lovers, wide-eyed kids and grownups looking for a trip down memory lane. With minimal entry fee and so much to look at, the aquarium will always be one of Mumbai's top tourist destinations.
Over 4,000 varieties of fish and a 360 degree view tunnel
Taraporewala Aquarium is also one of the biggest and the most immersive aquariums in the country. The aquarium had been renovated in 2015 and given a whole new look, which included addition of several marine and exotic fish, as well as a full marine ecosystem and variou fun activities to partake in.
The marine world is colourful and vibrant, which makes it a treat for young kids who're awed by the beauty, the lights and the "little fishies". However, even as an adult, the ecosystem, the variety of fish, the sea turtles, jellyfish and the many activities hold as much charm.
The aquarium has huge tanks complemented with LED lights which not only make the colours brighter, but the entire 'viewing' experience a whole lot more fun. Though, our favourite tank will have to be the circular jellyfish tank, because not only are the creatures gorgeous, they're fascinating to stare at.
The aquarium even has a 'petting pool' of sorts where people can come meet the fish and marine creatures in person! The pool is inhabited by star fish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and various turtles, which can all be touched and seen close up. Plus, who can forget the pedicure tanks, or spa for your feet, where 10 odd tanks can help you recieve the pedicure of dreams as tiny fish come and nibble the dead skin from your feet, leaving them smooth and new!
Be it a kid or an adult, aquariums can always prove to be fun, especially one that is as big and as diverse as the Taraporewala Aquarium. Going to the aquarium or even catching a quick documentary on marine life here is a pretty fun activity you can indulge in with your family, friends, siblings or significant other. Plus, since the aquarium is on Marine Drive, you can always head out and grab a quick-delicious bite.
