This revamped beach has multiple attractions!
What once stood as a neglected dump stretch at Mahim, is now a swanky new beach in Mumbai city. Built on a budget of 4 crores, the 'Mahim Beach Beautification Projet' was inaugurated today. This seafront is the first of its kind in Mumbai and has a 30-meter-tall beach watchtower, which serves as the vantage point for the picturesque Bandra Worli Sea Link and the stunning Mumbai skyline in the vicinity.
Mahim Beach awaits visitors!
The Tourism Minister of Maharashtra, Aditya Thackery inaugurated a 200-meter long small beach at Mahim on Friday. As per reports, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, Additional BMC Commissioner, Dr Sanjeev Kumar and other officials were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
"Mumbai has now got a new beach. Its area is much less compared with the others like Chowpatty or Juhu beaches but it has got the best of new amenities after the 'Mahim Beach Beautification Project' was completed," Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar informed reporters.
The transformation procedure
Stretching over an area of 5000 square metres, the Mahim sea stretch faced issues of illegal parking. The northern region of the beach faced encroachment, while the wall of the Mahim Police Colony on the south was tearing down. Besides, the space was crowded with local strewn garbage and criminals.
"We first removed the five encroachments by giving them alternative accommodation, cleared the approach route of all obstacles, cleared up all the garbage, removed all stones, big or small boulders and finally made it a smooth, clean, sandy, people-friendly beach," added the AMC.
The dilapidated coastal retaining wall has also been refurbished. The will barricade and prevent soil from washing out into the sea. The soil bed has been refilled to a height of 5 feet to patch up massive bald patches here and prevent soil erosion. This sand has been reportedly transferred from an ongoing work of the Mumbai Coastal Road project at Haji Ali, which helped the BMC save on a lot of money of the allotted budget.
The beach beautification makeover
A number of additions have completely transformed the Mahim beach, now making it an accessible open space in Mumbai. The newly repaired retaining wall has been beautified with vibrant paintings that display the cultural aspects of the city and the Mahim suburb. A footpath has also been established here for the benefit of visiting locals and tourists.
The BMC also pulled a 'green' revamp here and launched an extensive tree plantation drive at the beach. As per officials, around 200 Suru saplings, 350 seedlings of Tikoma, 300 seedlings of Bamboo, and 200 of Chafya now add to its eco-friendly virtue. Another step in this direction has also led to the installation of bamboo fence around the boundary of the entire stretch.
Enclosed within are artificial sculptures, scultped trees, an open-gym space and the first of its kind 30-meter-tall beach watchtower. Civic officials said the place will grow as a star tourist attraction and local hangout hotspot soon.
