Following the Diwali season, a few things are inevitable. One of them happens to be the post Diwali pollution that makes the air unsafe for us to breathe & becomes a health hazard for many.

This year, however, matters in Mumbai are not as bad as the past few years. As it turns out, Mumbai recorded the most uncontaminated Diwali in the past five years, which is something to rejoice about.

What's the update?

With the ever increasing concern for the environment, the message before Diwali was clear- to have a clean and green celebration, one that does the least amount of damage to the environment. Though not completely devoid of environmental damage, the celebrations in Mumbai haven't been as harmful to the environment as the celebrations in other cities. As of now, the AQI is dwindling between moderate and satisfactory levels.

Authorities have stated that though this is a good thing, pollution levels have risen to an alarming rate, and will continue to do so, at least for a few more days. Experts have alluded the relatively clean air in Mumbai to the rather light and mild rainfall pushed out most of the pollutants. These pollutants, mostly PM 2.5 and PM 10 particulates can tend to have an especially dire effect on youngsters and old people.

What about other cities?

The light rain spell following Diwali was just enough to get rid of quite a lot of the pollution. Along the west coast, several cities, including Pune, were saved from the wrath of poor air quality. However, cities such as Delhi and Lucknow have not been so lucky.

At any rate, the more pressing matter of saving the Earth and preserving our environment is what counts. The fact that Diwali 2019 has been cleaner than before (in Mumbai, at least) is also a result of people's growing awareness towards the environment.

With Mumbai's cleanest Diwali in the past five years, there comes a strong message, which reinstates the fact that we as a society must come together and stand up for the environment.
