Elon Musk’s Starlink is conducting crucial demonstration runs in Mumbai on October 30-31, marking a significant step toward launching satellite broadband services in India. According to PTI reports, these demos will showcase Starlink’s compliance with India’s security and technical requirements before law enforcement agencies, using provisional spectrum allocated to the company.
Final approvals and gateway stations ahead
The successful completion of these tests is essential for Starlink to secure final approvals under the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) framework. Starlink India Director Parnil Urdhwareshe recently emphasized the company’s focus on providing “secure, compliant, and high-quality broadband” to Indian users, particularly highlighting its mission to connect rural and remote areas where traditional broadband access remains limited.
Starlink plans to establish nine gateway stations across major cities including Mumbai, Noida, Kolkata, and Lucknow, with reported capacity for approximately 100,000 connections.
With India’s satellite communication market projected to grow from $4 billion to $15 billion by 2033, Starlink’s entry could revolutionise connectivity in remote areas. Though Starlink will also be competing with established players like Jio Satellite and Eutelsat OneWeb once spectrum allocation is finalised.
