Mumbai’s skyline transformed into a scene straight out of a comic book on Monday night! The Bandra-Worli Sea Link lit up with striking images of Superman, marking the first-ever use of the iconic structure to promote a Hollywood film. This sparked a wave of excitement across the city and social media.
Bandra-Worli Sea Link & Superman: A “moment of joy for Mumbai”
Suspension cables on the bridge featured Superman in full flight, followed by a glowing panel of his famous emblem. The installation, part of a bold campaign for director James Gunn’s upcoming film Superman, took both commuters and passersby by surprise.
Photographs of the illuminated bridge quickly flooded the internet, with fans calling it “magical”, “epic”, and “a moment of joy for Mumbai”. One user posted, “Superman in Mumbai. My heart is so happy right now.” Another wrote, “The Sea Link is lit up in blue with the Superman logo. What’s up, Mumbai?”
Officially named the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, the eight-lane cable-stayed bridge stretches 5.6 kilometres over the Arabian Sea, connecting Bandra and Worli. On Monday night, it also connected the city to a universe of superhero fandom.
A new chapter in the DC Universe
The film, which stars David Corenswet in the titular role, is set for global release on 11 July. It introduces a new chapter in the DC Universe and follows Superman as he tries to reconcile his alien origins with his life on Earth. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult.
Speaking at CinemaCon, Corenswet described the role as “a great honour” and acknowledged its powerful place in popular culture. Directed and written by James Gunn, and produced alongside Peter Safran, the film is based on the beloved characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
For one unforgettable night, Mumbai looked up and found Superman.
