The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken an ambitious project aimed at reviving the allure of Mumbai’s iconic Kala Ghoda precinct. According to a report by the Indian Express, the endeavour involves the transformation of five internal roads into pedestrian-only pathways.

This initiative aims to restore the old-world charm of the area and eventually make the streets exclusive to pedestrians. These streets, including Forbes Street, Rope Walk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road, will undergo significant beautification, prominently featuring cobblestone paving.
Jaydeep More, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of Ward A, detailed their plan to upgrade and beautify five internal streets in Kala Ghoda for pedestrian use. Tenders have been issued to appoint a consultant responsible for executing the designs, with Urban Design & Architecture Initiative (UDAI) overseeing the project, including landscaping and illumination works in three specific areas.
The initiative also aims to establish the area as an art hub, hosting events year-round, not just during the Kala Ghoda Art Festival. However, challenges regarding parking arrangements and coordination with local establishments remain, according to Rishi Aggarwal, Founder of Walking Project.
BMC plans similar initiatives in other areas
With Kala Ghoda as the pilot project, BMC plans to replicate similar pedestrian-friendly initiatives in other bustling areas like Colaba’s Regal Junction, signaling a paradigm shift towards sustainable urban spaces in Mumbai.
The project, reminiscent of a 2016 Sunday initiative, where roads were closed for vehicular traffic, aims to enhance the pedestrian experience while ensuring emergency access for heavy vehicles.
