India is all set to receive it’s very first geological history museum. The museum will house India’s unique natural history, geological and palaeontological specimens such as various kinds of rocks, pre-human skulls and dinosaur fossils. Though the land has not yet been found and/or the location decided, it is believed that the museum will be located somewhere in the National Capital Region.
What’s the update?
NCR is going to be the home of India’s first geological history museum- The Indian Museum of the Earth (TIME). The museum will be a testament to India’s rich natural history, it will also help recognize India’s influence on the geological and natural history of the world. The museum is expected to based somewhere in NCR.
The possibility and necessity to set-up The Indian Museum of the Earth (TIME), were discussed by Indian scientists and international experts at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), reports TOI.
Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the government, Vijay Raghavan was also quoted as saying that the government is dedicated to establish a world class museum in the country which is at par with museums like American Museum of Natural History.
Though the land has not yet been found, it has been decided that the museum will be set somewhere in NCR.
Why is it important?
India has a huge collection of prehistoric specimen which are scattered over labs and research institutes all over the country. Most of these are in a state of neglect when they should be preserved to study and research by generations of people to come. The museum will be significant in restoring and preserving such fossils and specimens.
Unlike other museums that are static and commonplace, the proposed The Indian Museum of the Earth (TIME), is expected to be a place which will encourage fossil research, student activity and make people more aware about India’s rich natural history.
India is home to a treasure trove’s worth of geological and palaeontological specimens that contain rich scientific information about our planet and its history. The fossils and important specimens which haven’t been properly organised and face neglect will have a specific repository to store them and compare them with newfound specimens. Hence, a museum of the likes of the Museum of Natural History in the US becomes a necessity and even has the scope to become a great attraction.
