With the second surge of the global pandemic currently bearing down upon India, several covid-relief operations are ongoing across all cities. Even the corporate giants have come forward to help the country during these tough times with initiatives spanning from donations, health insurance policies to vaccination awareness drives and more.

This article charts the COVID-relief campaigns undertaken by 5 private companies- MakeMyTrip (MMT), Maersk, Amazon India, Canon India and ARTPARK in various cities, including Lucknow, Mumbai and Jaipur, among others.

MMT making pandemic easy with CoviRide & more

On Thursday, MakeMyTrip- an online travel major, has announced a partnership with over 500 hotels across Lucknow, Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other cities. As per this partnership, post-booking a room via the MakeMyTrip platform, these hotels will provide comfortable isolation rooms for patients suffering from COVID-19.

Most of the partner hotels are also providing an all-meals inclusive rate to make the isolation period as self-contained as possible. Apart from this, the MakeMyTrip foundation is also procuring 300 oxygen concentrators. The initial set has already been shared with the Gurgaon administration, Delhi's Ganga Ram Hospital and NGOs like Hemkunt Foundation.

Further, MakeMyTrip has recently launched CoviRide, a platform that is designed to help individuals, organisations and larger communities to seek and provide transport related assistance for infected patients. This platform is available on both mobile web and desktop, will also help users in locating vaccination centres, drive through oxygen centres and hospitals, among other things.

Vaccination awareness drive by Canon India

Setting up support camps and conducting a vaccination awareness drive in its adopted villages- Maheshwari (Haryana), Parivali (Mumbai), Kalyanpur (Kolkata) and Annadodi (Bengaluru), is the team of Canon India. They are educating villagers by telling them about the process, benefits and after-effects of vaccination, apart from helping them with online registrations. Canon India has helped over 1,000 people with vaccination, within a week of the awareness drive.

Initiatives by for COVID relief

On Thursday, e-commerce major Amazon announced that it is providing COVID-19 health insurance covers to registered sellers on Amazon Marketplace. Amazon India will fully fund the premium cost of this insurance policy done through Acko General Insurance Limited (Acko) and this policy will be valid for one year, post-activation.

The insurance policy can be availed by the sellers who have an active listing on Amazon India between 1 January 2020 and 1 May 2021. When enrolled under the group policy, these sellers get coverage for COVID-19 hospitalisation, medical expenses up to ₹50,000 and domiciliary treatment expenses, as prescribed, up to the sum insured.

In addition to this initiative, Amazon India has introduced myriad measures to help marketplace sellers navigate the economic challenges caused by the pandemic, such as fee waivers, reimbursements and more, for affected sellers. It has also collaborated with Ketto to raise funds to support its marketplace sellers and Ketto will waive off the success fees for all such fundraisers.

Maersk facilitates logistics & supply for medical relief

Supporting India's fight against the second surge is the integrated container logistics company- Maersk. Currently, Maersk is facilitating shipments being imported from countries such as- Ireland, Finland, China, Germany, UAE, Qatar, Israel, South Africa and Singapore.

All air freight shipments to India are being facilitated by Maersk and done on a zero-profit basis, thereby, supporting the logistics and supply chain of medical relief. The company has also offered its water transportation service to organisations participating in medical relief at a nominal rate of $1 per container.

Till now, more than 6,000 oxygen concentrators, 500 oxygen cylinders, 60 cryogenic oxygen tanks and several medical supplies and ventilators have been transported into India by Maersk through its ocean and air freight solutions. As per reports, more shipments from China, Turkey and Dammam still in progress.

AI-powered solution by ARTPARK

In collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and health-tech startup Niramai, AI & Robotics Technology Park (ARTPARK)- a not-for-profit foundation, has launched XraySetu. This digital tool is an AI-driven solution that will facilitate early intervention in COVID-19 cases. Further, this platform can also detect 14 other lung-related ailments, including tuberculosis and pneumonia.

XraySetu has the ability to work with analogue as well as digital X-rays and low-resolution images sent from mobile phones. This free-to-use platform has successfully helped more than 300 doctors in rural areas, over the last 10 months. XraySetu can be used by doctors anywhere in India to perform quick chest X-ray interpretation over Whatsapp chatbot.

BMC begins door-to-door vaccination trial for bed-ridden people in Mumbai

The first phase of the doorstep vaccination has been rolled out in Mumbai's K-east ward.

The Brihannumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday launched the trial for door-step vaccination to strengthen its immunity drive for the bed-ridden people in Mumbai. As per reports, the first phase of the door-to-door scheme will be tested in the western suburb of Andheri (East), Marol, Chakala and other areas of the K-east ward. The information about these bed-ridden citizens will be aggregated at the, the civic body stated. So far details of around 4,466 such people have been received.
