SodaBottleOpenerWala is a contemporary neighborhood Iranian restaurant with a difference. This bistro blends the Iranian hotel culture with popular eatables, even street foods, to offer a spread like no other in the city.
We all know about the distinctive Irani Chai but there's so much more that this community brings to the table, literally. SodaBottleOpenerWala will proudly be completing 5 years and to find out what keeps the populace hooked on to them, we paid this joint a visit.
What we gorged on?
Service: Very polite, patient and helpful staff.
Portion: Dishes like Eggs Kejriwal and all the Vada Pavs on the menu were a complete meal for one. The Pulao with any one vegetable/chicken/mutton/prawn dish should be sufficient for three moderately hungry people. The desserts could easily be shared by two.
USP: The menu has a variety of dishes ranging from traditional Parsi cuisine to a modernized version of classic dishes. Most of the seafood served is brought straight from Mumbai. Not only that, even the Parsi Dairy Farm Kulfi comes from there. Mrs. Sodabottleopenerwala’s Special Cold Coffee is true to its name and its recipe is a secret worth protecting. In case you get confused looking at the menu, which is totally understandable given how vast it is, just ask the staff for recommendations. They will not let you down!
To sum it up-
Very different from a lot of restaurants in terms of the theme, cuisine and ideas, SodaBottleOpenerWala has kept the culture alive in all their outlets.
The food is wholesome and true to their roots. The Berry Pulao is a colourful rice preparation with chicken/mutton/vegetables cooked in Parsi masala topped with berries and nuts. It is a unique combination of sweet, sour and spicy- all at once. The Salli Chicken is a Parsi style chicken curry topped with potato salli. If you prefer mutton, you can try the Salli Boti which is a similar preparation. The Tangy Bhajji made using Goat Cheese, served with Maska Pav was one of our personal favorites.
The Raspberry Soda is a must have as it is made using real frozen raspberries and is perfect to beat the heat this summer. The Seakan-je-bin is inspired from the city of Shiraz in Iran. It is essentially prunes and jaggery, topped with lemonade and mint.
The menu offers a number of desserts but the most famous ones are Lagan-Nu Custard which is a special sweet dish prepared during weddings and the Parsi Dairy Farm Kulfi which comes straight from Mumbai.
The stairs to the restaurant took us instantly to a traditional Parsi setting, far away from the noise of the city. Little things like black and white photographs of family members on the walls, jars filled with candy, elongated chai-glasses and specials written on the black-board with colourful chalk, all stay true to the theme. The music was mostly retro- from ‘Daddy Cool’ to ‘Raat Kali Ek Khwaab Me Aayi’, they played it all!
This bistro with its luscious foodporn, is where your palate pleasure meets intense foodgasms.
