If you're someone who uses Delhi Metro frequently, then you would know that the smart cards are a lifesaver and a must for all metro travellers. However, even if you're not an avid metro user, it would be wise to get a smart card for yourself because very soon, you could pay fees at parking lots using your metro card and do much more than just using it for the rides.

To know how your smart card can be used for more than just paying for metro travel, read on.

Say goodbye to haphazard parking!

One Smart Card for All

Though you can already use your smart card for a number of things, soon, you will be able to pay for parking at government approved parking lots across Delhi. Earlier, the authorities had pushed the initiative of ONE Smart card, which essentially ensured that travellers could use just one card on the metro or DTC buses. This new initiative is an extension of that and makes it all the more worthwhile to get a metro smart card.

Since the move is still in its planning and preparatory phase, it should take a while to actually be implemented. To make this dream into a reality, the EPCA (Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority) will have to work with other organizations to set up infrastructure. This will include installation of geotagging technology and RFID reading posts at parking lots as well as QR code tagging.

Queues at Smart Card counters

At its core, the goal of this change is to make Delhi better connected- in every aspect of the word. Additionally, it is another step in encouraging people to use parking lots. Since most vehicles are parked at the side of the roads, it leads to huge traffic jams that are easily avoidable.

Since using your metro smart cards eliminates the need of cash at parking lots, we can safely say that Delhi is heading towards an era of plastic money.

Knock Knock

Though as of now, there's very little confirmation on when your smart card will become fit for use at parking lots, we can expect trails to start in December, 2019. This development is something that all frequent users of Delhi metro are going to cherish.
