Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has permitted 62 private hospitals in Mumbai to resume the COVID-19 inoculation drive. As per reports, about 71 private facilities had to suspend their vaccination activity last week due to a crunch in the number of available doses. However, over the weekend, BMC received about 2,35,000 vaccine doses, kickstarting the vaccination drive in the private hospitals once again. The remaining 9 hospitals will also be buying vaccine vials soon and will accordingly be permitted to restart the vaccination drive starting Tuesday.
Accelerating Mumbai's COVID-19 vaccination drive
BMC has granted permission to private hospitals to set up vaccination camps at private hospitals. Working spaces with over one hundred employees will now get their own vaccination booths, the Chief of BMC's public health department stated. This will enable the civic body to cover maximum citizens in the permitted age group.
These tie-ups will be established as per the Centre's guidelines, the civic officials added. Private hospitals will have to follow a set of protocols and station doctors and an emergency vehicle, in case of a critical case or an adverse effect.
Boosting medical infrastructure to keep up with the COVID load
In wake of the COVID upsurge in Maharashtra, BMC Municipal Chief on Monday, stated that the government is planning to set up 3 jumbo field centres in Mumbai. Expected to commence in 5 to 6 weeks, each of these facilities will be equipped with 2,000 beds, including 200 ICU and 70% oxygen beds. As per the BMC Chief, they will be located strategically across the Mumbai metropolis for the benefit of the people.
Additionally, to create a higher vacancy for 'needy' patients, the administration has also requested certain four-star and five-star hotels to create COVID-19 care centres for those people who have recovered substantially. A 'needy' patient is described as the one with "mild or serious symptoms or a Covid-19 patient with comorbidities". These care centres will be managed by professionals from major private hospitals, as per officials.
