Mounted on the rails leading to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, an all-new 'Restaurant on Wheels' is here to win hearts and bellies of passengers and locals alike. Launched by the Central Railway, the exquisite fine-diner is a revamped discarded rail coach that promises to offer a unique experience to its patrons. As per railway officials, the Restaurant on Wheels aims to become a popular landmark eatery in South Mumbai, with its one-of-a-kind 'rail themed' setting and ambiance.
Restaurant on Wheels can accommodate 40 patrons at one time
Set up under the banner of 'Innovative Ideas' catering policy, the brand new restaurant coach is stationed at the Heritage Gully, opposite platform 18 of the CSMT. The Heritage Gully in itself is renowned for various rail artefacts such as narrow-gauge locomotives, remnants of the old printing press and the restaurant will bring back the public attention to its historic glory.
Moreover, this prime location has sufficient space and connectivity to the suburbs via Freeway, making it accessible to the general public. The design and decor of this diner have been crafted to pronounce the railway setting for all and has around 10 tables within. These can hold up to 40 patrons at one time.
The restaurant abides by all COVID-19 guidelines, as prescribed by the Government for all eateries in Mumbai. As per reports, all operations of this venture will be managed by a contractor, appointed by the CSMT. As per the Chief PRO of Central Railway, the menu and the cost will be decided by the said contractor. All dining rates will be approved with the CR, according to the market price, added reports.
5 other locations to have similar restaurants in Maharashtra
Meanwhile, the Central Railway is also exploring the possibility of setting up such similar units at other stations in Mumbai. The project is being reviewed for the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kalyan, Neral, Lonavala and Igatpuri are under review.
Besides the CSMT, the Central Railway has approved the tenders for opening 'Restaurant on Wheels' for 5 other locations in Maharashtra. These include Nagpur, Akurdi, Chinchwad, Baramati and Miraj stations.
