Netflix launched in India in 2016 and since then, the content generated on this OTT platform has powered the nation's creative industry. It has presented to the audience, some of the best scripts like the International Emmy-winning series- Delhi Crime, Sacred Games, Sex Education and Money Heist, among others.
Consequently, in a bid to contribute more to the Indian creative industry, this streaming major has decided to open its first global post-production office in Mumbai. Apart from boosting employment opportunities, this will help in promoting the spirit of collaboration among creators, across geographical and linguistic boundaries.
Facility to be operational by June 2022
Indian cinema industry produces well over 1500 movies every year, to entertain its audience and making the best use of this creative industry, is Netflix. Mumbai will soon be home to this streaming major's first full-service, live-action, wholly-owned post-production facility that will engage with Indian and global projects.
Expected to be operational by June 2022, this facility will have 40 offline editing rooms to foster an inspiring and collaborative environment among directors, editors, showrunners and sound designers. This one-of-a-kind global facility is expected to result in advanced media management workflows.
NetFX launched in 2020
Making it easier for creators to work and collaborate during the pandemic, Netflix had launched a cloud-based platform- NetFX. This platform enables multiple Indian artists to work on the VFX for global titles. Netflix is also investing in the latest technologies and skill development through certifications and workshops to help budding creators enhance their portfolios.
With over 208 million paid subscribers across 190 countries, Netflix ranks among the online streaming industry giants. It invested about $410 million on local programming in 2019 and 2020, hence, expanding operations through an online platform catering to Indian artists and an offline facility based in Mumbai was always on the cards.
