The movie Rocketman- about the life and times of legendary musician Elton John made waves when it was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival, 2019. Actor Taron Egerton may have drawn raves at Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of singer Elton John in "Rocketman" but the legend's first choice to portray him on the big screen was actor and singer Justin Timberlake.
The former boybander-turned-hitmaker and actor Timberlake had once starred in the David LaChapelle-helmed video of John's 2001 song "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore". Timberlake has also taken a lot of inspiration from Elton John in his musical styles and stage presence. The fact that he was considered for the role of the singer was a great feat for him in itself.
"But we never formerly approached Justin because we weren't ever at a stage where it was the right time to approach him," John's husband and "Rocketman" producer David Furnish said. Furnish added: "But he did an amazing job in the video. He put on a prosthetic nose, and it turned out to have been some really interesting acting work as well."
In fact, even Tom Hardy, an actor of great acclaim and accolades, was considered for the role. However, John appeared to throw a little shade on the "Venom" star and stated that he wouldn’t fit in such an environment or the role itself.
Finally, Elton John and the casting team came to an agreement on Taron Egerton. "Taron Egerton came onboard this film because somebody else dropped out," he told the crowd at the film's Cannes afterparty. He quickly added: "His performance in this film is scary brilliant… When I watch the movie, I don't see an actor, I see myself." He brought new life to the movie and portrayed Elton in a larger than life fashion on the silver screen. Fans too, were happy with the performance and the film as a whole left them satisfied.
