BlackBerry KEY2 at ₹42,990 is more than just its QWERTY keypad

Optiemus Infracom Ltd which holds the BlackBerry license has just announced the BlackBerry KEY2 in India. The legacy brand, BlackBerry still seems to pack a fire under their belly churning out a phone every year. With Optiemus Infracom Ltd as its licensee, BlackBerry KEY2 succeeds over last year’s KeyOne. The BlackBerry KEY 2 is being manufactured in India under the government’s Make in India initiative.

The KEY2 features a 4.5-inch FHD (1620x1080 pixels) IPS display which has a 3:2 aspect ratio. Further, the display is topped by a coating of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 which makes it more resistant to drops. One of the highlighting features of a BlackBerry smartphone, the QWERTY keypad is housed below the display. The BlackBerry KEY2 has a Series 7 aluminum alloy chassis and a textured rear panel which provides a good grip.

Before we get into the nitty gritties, the KEY2 has a Speed Key which is essentially a shortcut to the most used apps by the user. The fingerprint sensor is embedded into the space key. The entirety of the keypad is touch sensitive and allows itself to be used as a trackpad while browsing and makes Flick typing easier.

The BlackBerry KEY2 isn’t just its keypad. BlackBerry has a reputation for building in security features in its smartphones and rightly so, the KEY2 comes loaded with the company’s DTEK security suite. It enables users to monitor their apps usage, data accessed by apps. The security suite also comes with a Locker app which will help users store and protect confidential data, including apps, images and videos among other files.

Under the hood, the BlackBerry KEY2 rocks a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset with Kryo 260 octa-core processor. This is backed by 6GB of RAM and an internal storage of 64GB which can further be expanded by up to 256GB.

The KEY2 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with a couple of preloaded apps like the DTEK security suite and BlackBerry Hub.

BlackBerry KEY2 is also the first of its kind to sport a dual camera setup on the rear. It comprises of twin 12-megapixel sensors accompanied by dual tone LED flash with f/1.8 and f.2.6 apertures respectively. There’s an 8-megapixel front-facing camera as well. The cameras on the KEY2 will allow users to create photographs with features like portrait mode, optical zoom. BlackBerry has also integrated Google Lens into the cameras which will help users in getting more information right from their camera frames.

The KEY2 has a 3,500mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0 and enables the phone to get recharged by up to 50 percent in around 40 minutes. BlackBerry claims that the phone will provide approximately 25+ hours of usage upon mixed use.

The BlackBerry KEY2 will go on sale starting July 31 on Amazon India. It is priced at ₹42,990 and comes with a bunch of launch offers from Reliance Jio and ICICI Bank.
