Exclusive: Asus wants to rain on Redmi 6’s parade with two new Zenfone Max phones

The mid-level smartphone segment here in India is competitive, there’s no doubt about it. Majorly dominated by Xiaomi, it was Asus who pulled out an ace earlier this year in May with its Zenfone Max Pro (M1). Boasting a humongous 5,000mAh battery this phone took it straight to the bestseller in the segment, Redmi Note 5 Pro. Six months into the launch and with over 1 million units sold, Asus is now gearing up to take on Xiaomi’s Redmi 6 series.

According to our source, who is in the know-how of these things, Asus will be announcing two new smartphones under ₹12,000 in their Max series lineup. The Asus Zenfone Max Lite (M1) and a regular Zenfone Max are the two upcoming phones from the company.

As these two smartphones are expected to be much more affordable than the Max Pro (M1), they will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 400-series chipset. Interestingly, this reminded us of Asus’ Zenfone Max (M1) that was announced alongside the Pro version, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430. While that phone never made it to India, it could be possible that Asus may launch the Max (M1) along with a Lite variant.

Other features of the Zenfone Max (M1) include a 5.5-inch HD+ (1440 x 720 pixels) display covered with a 2.5D curved glass. It features a dual camera setup on the back consisting of a primary 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture along with an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera that captures 120-degree field-of-view. On the front, there’s an 8-megapixel snapper with 85-degree field-of-view. Additionally, the phone also comes with a dedicated microSD card for expanding the storage by up to 256GB.

Xiaomi recently launched its Redmi 6 series in India with the Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Redmi 6 Pro. These smartphones range all the way from ₹5,999 to ₹12,999 with various RAM and storage options to choose from.

With the launch of the Max (M1) and Max Lite (L1), Asus will have three value for money smartphones in its arsenal to take on the competition.

Coincidentally, Asus has also sent press invites for an event on October 17 where we can expect the company to unveil two new smartphones under the Max-series.
