Google to bring eSIM to India with Airtel and Reliance Jio

Google eSIM will be available in India soon

Last year’s Pixel 2 was the first major smartphone to come equipped with eSIM capabilities. This year, with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, Google aimed to bring eSIMs into the everyday lives of smartphone users.

An eSIM makes even the miniscule nano SIM look outdated. It is a technology that allows users to operate a phone number and connect to communication services using a virtual SIM, thereby eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. Another benefit of the eSIM is that it will enable users to operate multiple numbers using the virtual SIM card. In the coming future, eSIMs will be compatible with Wear OS, Android and Chrome OS as well.

Now, Google is expanding the carriers that are available with Pixel 3 in the US, UK and India. In the U.S, you can get an eSIM capable phone with carriers such Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, in the U.K with EE and in India, via Airtel and Reliance Jio. You can head on to a Google Fi store or Google Store to know of the full range of the eSIM capable smartphones.

We are eager to see how the trend will fare in the Indian market, where things are slow and take a lot of time to be implemented. It would certainly be groundbreaking to see eSIMs become a common trend.

To enable more manufacturers to get in on the eSIM trend, Google will soon add a program in Android to enable OEMs to make phones with the capability. Google is optimistic about the future of eSIM and has plans to expand the connectivity to tablets, laptops, smart devices, and of course, mobiles.
