Nubia, a sub-brand of ZTE fresh off from their recent venture with a gaming smartphone is set to unveil a rather bold smartphone. With the MWC around the corner, they aim to launch another unique and groundbreaking smartphone. Their latest smartphone could likely be a one of a kind foldable smartphone that doubles as a smartwatch. The launch event of the phone will take place on February 25.
Recently, ZTE sent out media invites for the launch event that is set to take place on February 25. The invite consists of the tagline ‘flex your life’ and also has representational images of a foldable smartphone. Judging by the ‘alpha’ logo on the invite, it is highly likely that the phone will be named Nubia Alpha.
A prototype of the phone has been seen at the IFA 2018 where they presented a working model of a phone that would double up as a smartphone. At the MWC 2019, the final and refined phone could likely be launched.
The prototype showcased a tall display with thin side bezels. It can be assumed that the length of the phone is to accommodate the user’s wrist. Additionally, details about the software that it will use are scarce. The company could go with Google’s Android wear OS or it could develop its own software like the Samsung Gear series.
MWC 2019 will showcase a lot of foldable smartphones, a trend that has become very common of late. Along with the Nubia smartphone, Huawei is also expected to launch their version of a foldable smartphone. Though the Huawei smartphone will not be as unconventional as the Nubia phone, it is still a futuristic step from the company. Apart from that, Samsung’s highly anticipated foldable phone could also launch alongside the upcoming S10 lineup.
As of now, there is not much of a market for foldable smartphones. It is unclear whether it will actually shape the future of smartphones, or if it is just something of a gimmick. At any rate, the future is now.
