OnePlus revealed earlier this month during the launch of the Snapdragon 855 chipset that it would be launching a 5G smartphone next year. And it seems that the company is indeed working on launching it as soon as it can. However, while OnePlus stated that its 5G phone won’t be the OnePlus 7, new rumours suggest otherwise.
According to a new leak by tipster Ishan Agarwal, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau is seen handling a white/silver colour variant of the OnePlus 5G smartphone. Another interesting aspect about this phone is its camera module, which is eerily similar to the one on the Nokia Lumia 1020. A OnePlus executive can also be seen explaining the contents of a slide that talks about the same phone.
While the circular and huge camera module definitely sparks interest, the image is not clear enough to reveal exactly how many camera sensors are housed in it. There is a possibility that the OnePlus 5G smartphone could feature a triple rear camera setup, but it deviates from the fact that it won’t be an actual flagship device. OnePlus had earlier stated that its first 5G smartphone won’t be the OnePlus 7, but the expected launch schedule of the OnePlus 5G smartphone and OnePlus 7 are too close for this to be true.
This has sparked rumours that the OnePlus 7 could be OnePlus’ first 5G smartphone, and might launch in the first quarter of 2019. It could also be possible that OnePlus might use the same design for both OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 5G device. Another possibility at this point is that this design could merely be just a prototype, and the OnePlus 7/5G may not actually feature the huge camera module.
OnePlus has also revealed that its 5G smartphone will be $200-300 costlier than the OnePlus 6T, which does suggest that the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 5G device could be two different smartphones. It remains to be seen if the difference is just 5G support, or if there are other hardware variations, too.
