South Korean electronics giant Samsung has announced its first ever Android Oreo (Go Edition) smartphone, called the Galaxy J2 Core in India. The smartphone is aimed at first-time smartphone buyers or consumers on the lookout for a secondary phone.
Being an entry-level smartphone, the Galaxy J2 Core is a decent option for first-time buyers and for its asking price, it does the basics right. The USP of the phone is that it runs on Android Oreo (Go Edition), which is essentially a toned down version of Android designed by Google for phones with 1GB or less RAM.
The Android Oreo (Go Edition) comes with optimizations for budget devices and light versions of Google apps such as Files Go, Maps Go, etc. While Android One devices offer a stock Android experience, the Samsung Galaxy J2 core is an Android Oreo (Go Edition) device and it has Samsung's UI skinned on top. Samsung says that they went with their own UI atop the stock Android because of its fans who love the Samsung Experience. The Samsung UI on the J2 Core itself is a very toned down version of the interface comes come with phones like S9 and Note 9. With this, Samsung may just have wanted to keep the experience same across all its smartphones and hence skinned the J2 Core as well.
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core runs on Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition) with a Samsung skin on top. It features a 5-inch qHD TFT display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9.
In terms of performance, the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is powered by a quad-core Exynos 7570 SoC coupled with Mali-T720 MP1 GPU. The phone features 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage which can be further expanded up to 256GB via a dedicated microSD card.
Coming to the camera department, the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core features an 8MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash. On the front, it sports a 5MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture. The cameras are pretty decent but users should not hope for features such as face unlock.
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is powered by a 2.600mAh battery. Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, 3.5mm audio jack, FM Radio, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS and a micro USB port.
Commenting on the launch, Sumit Walia, Director, Samsung India Mobile business said, “Galaxy J2 Core reiterates Samsung’s commitment towards meaningful innovations that delight our customers. We are pleased to integrate industry-first smart memory management solutions that allow apps or content on the memory card. We are also pleased to partner with Google in bringing the latest Android experience for entry-level smartphones with Oreo (Go Edition) on Galaxy J2 Core. This approach eradicates current consumer pain points by opening apps 15% faster, delivering 2X storage out of the box, and allowing consumers to stream content for up to 11 hours on YouTube Go. This is indicative of Samsung’s commitment to a digitally enabled India by allowing our customers to Go Faster & Go Longer.”
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core has been priced at ₹6,190 and is available in Gold, Blue and Black color options from all retail stores across the country.
