South Korean tech giant Samsung has finally unveiled its much anticipated foldable smartphone at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC 2018) in San Francisco. The company has been working on the device for a long time and has finally revealed a working prototype of the device.

Earlier reports had hinted that the Samsung’s foldable phone will feature two displays - a 7.3-inch full display and a smaller 4.6-inch display. The outer 4.6-inch display has an aspect ratio of 21:9 with 840 x 1960 pixel resolution and the 7.3-inch inner display has a resolution of 1536 x 2152 pixels.

In a boost for Samsung, Google at the Computer History Museum announced support for foldable smartphones. This comes in response to several manufacturers working on foldable phones. Some companies have claimed that they will announce their foldable phones in 2019.

Samsung during its event announced that it will be able to start mass production of its device in a “matter of months”. In addition to Samsung, other smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Huawei, LG and Lenovo are also working on foldable phones.

As Google has announced support for foldable phones, applications working on the outer display will be able to use the inner 7.3-inch display when the device is unfolded. While using the device in tablet mode, users will have the option to use three applications at once.

Samsung has termed its foldable display technology as “The Infinity Flex Display”. Commenting on this, the company has said, “Since glass is not pliable, we developed a new material for the cover window that’s flexible and durable. And to ensure the reliability of the display, we found a unique adhesive that enhances the display’s elasticity and keeps its strength even when it's folded and unfolded over and over again.”
